There are a few steps involved in creating a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) account: creating an account, creating a property for your website or app, and adding the tracking code to your website.

Before you begin

Step 1: Create an Analytics account
  1. Navigate to the Google Analytics website.
  2. Click Start measuring if this is your first time using Analytics. If you already have an account, go to the Admin section (the gear icon) and click Create > Account.
  3. Enter a descriptive Account name (e.g., your company name) and configure the data-sharing settings as you prefer.
  4. Click Next to proceed.
Step 2: Create a property
A property holds the data for your website or app.  A single Analytics account can contain multiple properties.
  1. Enter a Property name (e.g., your website name).
  2. Select your Reporting time zone and Currency.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter your business information, including your Industry category and Business size. This helps tailor your reporting experience.
  5. Select your Business objectives. If you are unsure, choose "Get baseline reports" to receive all standard reports.
  6. Click Create and accept the Google Analytics Terms of Service.

After creating your property, you will be prompted to choose a platform. Select Web.
  1. Enter your website's URL and a Stream name.
  2. Ensure Enhanced measurement is enabled. This feature automatically tracks page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, and other user interactions.
  3. Click Create stream.
Step 4: Install the Google tag on your website
To start collecting data, you must add the Google tag to your website.
  1. Click View tag instructions.
  2. Choose one of the following installation methods:
    • Install manually: Copy the JavaScript snippet and paste it into the <head> section of every page on your website.
    • Install with a CMS: If you use a website builder like Wix or Squarespace, follow their specific instructions, which may only require your "G-" Measurement ID.
    • Install with Google Tag Manager: If you use Tag Manager, you can add and configure the tag through its interface.
  3. Click Save or publish your changes. Data collection can take up to 30 minutes to begin.
Step 5: Verify your setup
Wait about 15–30 minutes, then go to the Realtime report in your Google Analytics account to confirm that your website is receiving data.
Open your website in a separate tab and browse a few pages to generate some traffic.  You should see yourself as an active user in the Realtime report.
